ワイルドな

解説 Definition

wilderはwildの比較級で、「より野性的な、より荒々しい、より奇抜な」という意味です。自然環境や行動、発想などが、比較する相手や以前の状態よりも制御されず、型にはまらない様子を表します。

More wild, uncontrolled, rugged, or unconventional than someone or something else. It is the comparative form of “wild” and can describe increasingly untamed landscapes, more disorderly behavior, or ideas and experiences that are more extreme or unusual.

使い方 Usage

  • wilder than ...で比較相手を示します。比較相手が文脈から分かる場合は、than以下を省くこともあります。 Use wilder than ... to name the comparison. The than phrase can be omitted when the comparison is understood from context.
  • become wilderやgrow wilderで「より野性的に、より荒々しくなる」という変化を表します。 Become wilder and grow wilder describe a change toward a more untamed or disorderly state.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

wildに-erを付けて「よりワイルドな」。語末のdは重ねずwilderと書きます。人の住む地域から離れるほど、景色が野性的になっていく様子を思い浮かべましょう。

Add -er to wild to mean “more wild,” without doubling the final d. Picture a landscape becoming increasingly untamed as you move away from settled areas.

wilder の語源・成り立ち Etymology

wilder は wild の比較級で、wild + -er から成ります。wild は古英語 wilde「飼いならされていない、自然のままの」にさかのぼるため、wilder は「より野性的で荒々しい」という意味になります。関連語に wilderness, bewilder。

Wilder is formed from wild plus the comparative suffix -er. Wild comes from Old English wilde, meaning untamed, uncultivated, or living in a natural state, and has cognates in other Germanic languages. The suffix -er marks a higher degree of a short adjective, so wilder literally means “more wild.” The same base appears in wilderness, while capitalized Wilder also occurs independently as a surname.
