abnormal は ab-「離れて」+ norm「規準」+ -al。norm はラテン語 norma「物差し・直角定規」で、そこから「基準」を表し、abnormal は文字通り「基準から外れた」が異常なになった。関連語は normal, norm。
Abnormal comes from ab-, meaning "away from," plus normal, from Latin norma, a carpenter's square or rule. Norma came to mean a standard or pattern, so abnormal originally meant "away from the rule." From there, it developed into the sense of not fitting the usual standard. Related words are normal and norm.
