As an adjective, abstracted most commonly describes someone whose attention is absorbed in thought and withdrawn from the immediate surroundings. It can also describe a model, symbol, or shape represented without many of its specific or concrete details.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
abstracted は、人について使うと「意識が周囲から引き離された」ような、上の空の状態を表します。an abstracted expression(物思いにふけった表情)で中心義を覚えましょう。模型・記号・形については「具体的な細部から引き離して抽象化された」という意味になります。語末の -ed は /ɪd/ と発音します。
Picture someone with an abstracted expression: the person’s attention has been drawn away from the immediate surroundings and into thought. With models, symbols, and shapes, abstracted instead means that concrete details have been removed to leave selected general features. Because abstract ends in /t/, the -ed ending is pronounced /ɪd/.

abstracted の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語abs「離れて」+trahere「引く」に由来します。具体的な事物から離れて「引き出された」という原義が、形や実体から切り離して本質だけを抜き取る「抽象化された」という意味へ発展しました。同語根にextract(抽出する)、distract(気をそらす)があります。
Abstract ultimately comes from Latin abstractus, the past participle of abstrahere, “to draw away,” formed from abs, “away,” and trahere, “to draw or pull.” English abstracted adds the regular participial ending -ed to abstract. The literal idea of something being drawn away from concrete particulars developed into the modern sense of representing only selected, general, or essential features.
