現実とは、物事が実際に存在・生じている状態のことです。期待や想像ではなく、今現在起きている事実に焦点を当てた表現です。理想や仮定と区別して、物事の本当の姿を捉える際に使います。
Actuality means the state of being real or true in fact. It is used in more formal English when talking about real conditions or events, especially in contrast to ideas, beliefs, or appearances.

actual を知っていれば覚えやすい語。actual は「実際の・現実の」で、-ity が付くと「その性質・状態」になり、actuality は「実際にそうであること」「現実そのもの」。特によく見るのは in actuality で、「実際には」「現実には」。日常会話では reality のほうが普通で、actuality はやや硬めの語。appearance（見かけ）や possibility（可能性）と反対側に置き、頭の中の想像ではなく“本当に起きている側”だと結び付けると残りやすい。

actuality は actual + -ity で、actual は後期ラテン語 actualis、さらに actus「行為・なされたこと」に由来します。action や actor も同根なので、「現実」とは頭の中の可能性ではなく、実際に行われて形になったものだとわかります。
Actuality comes from actual + -ity. Actual comes from Late Latin actualis, from actus, meaning "act" or "something done," the same root seen in action and actor. The sense developed from "what is done in fact" to "real existence or reality."
