Affiliated is the past-participial form of affiliate. Affiliate comes from Medieval Latin affiliare, “to adopt as a son,” formed from ad-, “to,” and filius, “son”; the consonant in ad- was assimilated to produce af-. The original family image developed into the sense of admitting a person or body into close association. English then extended the verb to formal links between institutions, companies, schools, and other organizations. The suffix -d forms affiliated from affiliate.
