albacore は16世紀にポルトガル語 albacora から英語に入った魚名で、さらにアラビア語由来とされますが、元の形ははっきりしません。al- はアラビア語の定冠詞で、異国の名がそのまま残ったため、特定のマグロ名として定着した語だと分かります。関連形は albacora。
