dote は中英語 doten「ぼける・愚かになる」に由来し、詳しい起源は不詳ながらゲルマン系と考えられます。もとは理性がゆるむ感覚だったので、dote on は「分別を失うほど夢中になる」から「溺愛する」へ進み、dotage や dotty にも同じずれが残ります。
Dote comes from Middle English doten, meaning to be foolish or mentally weak, and its earlier origin is uncertain, though it is probably Germanic. The older idea was a loss of judgment or reason. From that, dote on developed the sense of loving someone so much that you seem irrational, which is also seen in dotage and dotty.
