ambassadorial は ambassador「大使」に、形容詞語尾 -ial が付いた語である。ambassador は古フランス語・イタリア語を経て、中世ラテン語、さらにケルト語系の「使者・従者」にさかのぼるとされ、embassy も同系なので「使いとして送られる人」の感覚が残っている。
Ambassadorial comes from ambassador with the adjective suffix -ial. Ambassador entered English through French and Italian forms, from Medieval Latin and probably an earlier Celtic source referring to a servant or messenger. The older idea of "someone sent on a mission" still remains in related words like embassy.
