amphitheater はギリシャ語 amphi「周囲に・両側に」と theatron「見る場所」が、ラテン語 amphitheatrum を経て入った語です。theater や theory と同じく「見る」が核で、観客席がぐるりと囲むので円形劇場の意味になりました。
