本来は天球上で観測者の真下にある点、つまり天頂の反対側にある天底を指す語。比喩的には、状況や評価、景気、感情などが最も悪い状態に落ち込んだ最低点・どん底という意味でも用いられる。
Nadir means the lowest point of a situation, process, or period. It is often used in formal or literary English to describe the worst moment. In technical use, it can also mean the point directly below an observer.

nadir は、対義的な zenith（天頂）と必ずセットで覚えると定着します。zenith が「いちばん上」なら、nadir は「いちばん下」。そこから比喩的に、景気・人気・気分・評価などが下がり切って reach its nadir（最低点に達する）と言えます。lowest point に近いですが、ただ低いのでなく「落ち続けた末のどん底」という含みが強い語です。上昇下降を描ける対象に使う、と場面ごと覚えると忘れにくいです。

nadir は中世ラテン語を経たアラビア語 nazir「向かい合うもの」に由来し、分解よりも天文学の専門語として入った語です。同じ語根 n-z-r をもつ nazir や nazar は「向き合う・見る」感覚を残し、天頂の真反対、つまり物事のどん底を指すようになりました。
Nadir came into English through medieval Latin from Arabic nazir, meaning something like "opposite" or "facing." It first belonged to astronomy, where it named the point opposite the zenith. From that technical sense, it later developed a wider figurative use for the lowest point. The Arabic root is connected with ideas of facing or looking.
