誰かや何かをばかにしたり、軽蔑して笑ったりすることです。相手を見下し、その人や物事を愚かなものとして扱う態度を表します。単なる笑いではなく、明確な不尊重やあざけりを含みます。
Derision is harsh laughter, mockery, or strong scorn toward someone or something. It is used when people show that they think a person or idea is foolish or not worthy of respect.

derision は古フランス語 derision を経て、ラテン語 derisio「嘲りの笑い」に由来し、de-「下へ・徹底的に」+ ridere「笑う」から成ります。deride, risible と同根で、「相手を笑いで見下す」感覚から『嘲笑』になりました。
