覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語の「アスパラガス」とほぼ同じですが、英語では食材全体を指す不可算名詞として fresh asparagus、grilled asparagus のように使うのが基本です。一本を数えるなら an asparagus spear や three stalks of asparagus と表します。市場で束を買い、オリーブ油で焼く場面と結び付けて覚えましょう。
The Japanese loanword アスパラガス points directly to asparagus, but remember its English grammar as well as its meaning. English usually treats the vegetable as uncountable: say “I bought fresh asparagus” or “We served grilled asparagus,” not normally “three asparagus.” To count individual pieces, use “three asparagus spears” or “three stalks of asparagus.” Picture the young shoots sold in a bundle at a market and learn the word with cooking combinations such as asparagus with olive oil, fish, or lemon.
例文

She cooked asparagus with olive oil.

asparagus の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語asparagusを経て、ギリシャ語asparagos(芽・若枝)に由来し、さらにペルシャ語のasparag(芽吹き)が起源とされる。語根spar-は「芽吹く・膨らむ」の意。関連語:spark(火花、同じ印欧語根*sper-「撒き散らす」)。地面から勢いよく芽吹く様子がそのまま名前になった野菜。
English asparagus came through Latin asparagus from Greek asparagos, the ancient name of the plant. The Greek word may itself have been borrowed from an earlier language, but its more remote history is not certain. The term has referred to the plant and its edible young shoots for centuries. Although folk forms such as sparrow grass later appeared in English, they resulted from reshaping the unfamiliar word and are not its true origin.
