Averted is the regular past-tense and past-participle form of avert. Avert came through French from Latin avertere, formed from ab-, “away,” and vertere, “to turn.” Its literal sense was therefore “to turn away.” This physical idea remains in averting one’s eyes, while the figurative development produced the sense “to prevent”: a danger is turned away before it can become an actual event. Divert and convert share the Latin root vertere.
