覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
awful「ひどい」が分かれば、-ness が付いて「ひどいこと・ひどさ」という抽象名詞だと押さえやすい語です。まず awful を軸に覚えるのが近道。badness より感情が強く、聞き手に『うわ、それはひどい』と思わせる響きがあります。the awfulness of the situation のように「状況・事件・体験のひどさ」で出やすいです。形が似た awesome は今ではむしろ肯定的に使われやすいので、awful と取り違えないのが重要です。
Take `awful` and add `-ness`, the common ending for a quality or state. That makes it easy to remember as the abstract form of `awful`. Keep it separate from `awesome`, which looks similar but usually feels positive.
例文

He was shocked by the awfulness of the results.

awfulness の語源・成り立ち Etymology
awfulness は awful+-ness、さらに awful は awe「畏れ・畏敬」+ -ful からできた語。awe は古ノルド語 agi「恐れ」に由来し、もとは「ぞっとするほど畏れを起こす感じ」なので、そこから転じて今の「ひどさ」の意味になった。関連語は awe, awesome。
"Awfulness" comes from "awful" plus the noun ending "-ness." "Awful" originally meant "full of awe," from "awe" and "-ful," and "awe" comes from Old Norse "agi," meaning fear or deep respect. Because something awe-inspiring could also seem frightening, the word later shifted toward the modern sense of something very bad; compare "awe" and "awesome."
