balmy は balm「香油・バルサム」に形容詞語尾 -y が付いた語で、balm はギリシャ語 balsamon にさかのぼる。香油のようにやわらげる感覚から「穏やかで心地よい」へ広がった。balsam や embalm も近い仲間。
