bornは古英語beranの過去分詞で「運ぶ、産む」が原義。ゲルマン祖語*beraną（運ぶ）に遡り、母が子を体内で「運ぶ」→「産む」と意味が発展した。関連語：bear（産む／耐える）、burden（重荷＝運ぶもの）。
