capitalizing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語capitalis(頭の)からフランス語を経て英語capitalに。capit-は「頭」を意味する語根で、captain(長)やdecapitate(斬首する)と同根。文字の「頭=先頭」を大きく書くことから「大文字にする」、また資本を活用する意味でも使われる。
Capitalizing is the -ing form of capitalize, created by dropping the final e before adding -ing. Capitalize is based on capital, ultimately from Latin capitalis, meaning “of the head,” from caput, “head.” Capital letters were understood as principal or leading letters, especially prominent initials. The verb therefore came to mean writing a letter in uppercase. Its separate sense of exploiting an opportunity developed through the financial and resource-related meanings of capital.
