cine はフランス語 ciné の借用で、cinéma の短縮形。さらに cinématographe にさかのぼり、語源はギリシャ語 kinein「動かす」なので、「動くもの・動く映像」という発想から「映画」の意味になった。関連語は cinema, kinetic。
Cine was borrowed from French ciné, a shortened form of cinéma. Cinéma itself was shortened from cinématographe, the French name for an early motion-picture apparatus. That longer word was built from Greek elements associated with movement and recording or writing; its first element is related to Greek kinein, “to move.” The development from an apparatus for recording movement to the general idea of film explains the modern sense.
