cinnamon は古フランス語 cinnamone、ラテン語 cinnamomum、ギリシャ語 kinnamomon を経て、さらにフェニキア語系でヘブライ語 qinnamon に近い語へさかのぼる。分解しにくいのは香料名が交易で丸ごと借用されたためで、舶来品らしい語だとわかる。関連語は cinnamic, Cinnamomum。
Cinnamon reached English through Old French and Latin cinnamomum, from Greek kinnamomon. The Greek form was itself borrowed from an earlier Semitic source comparable to Hebrew qinnamon, although the word’s more distant history is not certain. Because cinnamon was a valuable traded spice, its name passed between languages largely as a complete borrowed term. The botanical genus name Cinnamomum and the adjective cinnamic preserve recognizable forms of the same spice name.
