解説 Definition
カタツムリとは、殻を背負った小さな陸生軟体動物で、ゆっくり移動します。雨の日によく見かけ、野菜や植物を食べます。
A snail is a small, slow-moving animal with a soft body and a hard shell on its back. It is commonly found in gardens and wet places, and it moves by sliding along the ground.

snail は古英語 snægl にさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン祖語 *snagila、印欧祖語 *sneg-「這う・忍び進む」に通じます。殻のある生き物というより、もともとは「這って進むもの」という感覚の語で、だから動きの遅さの連想も自然です。関連語は snake。
Snail comes from Old English snægl and goes back to an older Germanic root, probably linked with the idea of creeping or crawling. So the word originally focused more on the creature's slow movement than on its shell. That is why the modern feeling of slowness fits the history of the word well. It may be distantly related to snake through the same crawling idea.
