解説 Definition
「文明」とは、人類が発展させてきた社会的・文化的・技術的な成果の総体を指す名詞です。都市の形成、文字の使用、法律や制度の整備などが文明の特徴とされています。特定の地域や時代における高度に組織化された社会のあり方を表す際に使われます。
Civilisation is a highly developed human society with organized government, culture, and social systems. The word is also used more broadly for the culture and way of life of a large society over time.

civilisation は civil「市民の・礼儀正しい」や citizen を知っていると覚えやすい語です。個人の性質ではなく、社会全体が法律・都市・技術・文化を備えて発達した状態を指し、culture より大きな単位で使われます。history of civilisation, ancient civilisation などの形でよく見ます。なお英式綴りは -s-、米式は civilization の -z- なので、同じ語としてセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。
