civilization は civilize + -ation からできた語で、civilize はフランス語 civiliser を経てラテン語 civilis「市民の・社会の」に由来する。civilis は civis「市民」が元なので、原義は「人々を市民社会らしく整えること」。そこから「洗練された社会の状態」すなわち「文明」の意味になった。関連語は civil, civic。
