調合して作る、でっち上げる

複数の材料を混ぜ合わせて料理や飲み物などを作り出すこと、また話や言い訳、計画などをもっともらしく作り上げることを表す動詞。後者では、事実ではないものをひねり出す、でっち上げるという否定的な響きを伴うことが多い。

con- は together の感覚、concoct は『材料や話をあれこれ一緒に混ぜて作る』と押さえると覚えやすい。まず料理では concoct a soup/drink のように“調合する”。そこから比喩で concoct a story/excuse と言えば、facts を素直に tell するのでなく、もっともらしく組み立てて“でっち上げる”感じ。単なる make より不自然さや作為が強い語。
