cortege はフランス語 cortège から入り、さらにイタリア語 corteggio、ラテン語 cohors/cortis 系の「宮廷・付き従う人々」にさかのぼります。もとは貴人に付き従う行列を指し、そこから葬儀に付き従う列へ意味が定まって「葬列」になりました。関連語は court、courtesy。
