cosine は、三角関数のコサインという意味です。直角三角形や単位円を使う数学・物理の文脈で使われ、日本語の「コサイン」とほぼ同じ意味です。
Cosine is a trigonometric function that, for an acute angle in a right triangle, equals the length of the adjacent side divided by the hypotenuse. On the unit circle, it gives the horizontal coordinate of the point determined by an angle.

ラテン語 complementi sinus（余角の正弦）の略。co- は complementum「補完」の短縮形で、sinus は「曲線、湾」の意。関連語に sine（正弦）、sinuous（曲がりくねった）がある。余角の sine という意味から生まれた数学用語。
Cosine comes from a shortened form of Medieval Latin complementi sinus, meaning “sine of the complement.” The Latin phrase was later abbreviated in mathematical writing, and the resulting form developed into cosine. Sinus literally meant a bend, fold, or bay before becoming the mathematical term sine through the history of translation. Thus cosine originally described the sine of an angle complementary to the given angle.
