culprit の語源・成り立ち Etymology
culprit は英仏法廷語 cul prit に由来し、もとは検察側の『有罪、立証の用意あり』という定型句でした。これが被告本人を指す語と誤解され、今の『犯人』に定着。背景にはラテン語 culpa『罪・過失』があり、関連語に culpable がある。
Culprit comes from Anglo-French legal language, especially the court phrase cul prit. That phrase originally meant something like "guilty" and "ready to prove it," spoken by the prosecution. Later, people misunderstood it as a word for the accused person, and it became the modern noun. It is related to Latin culpa, "fault" or "blame," also seen in culpable.
