A debenture is a type of loan certificate issued by a company or other organization to raise money. People who buy it lend money and are paid interest in return. It is mainly used in finance and business, and often refers to debt not backed by a specific physical asset.

中世ラテン語 debentur「支払われるべきもの」が語源で、さらに debere「負っている、借りがある」にさかのぼります。もともと「返す義務のある金」を示す語なので、返済約束を記した証書、転じて社債の意味になりました。関連語に debt, debit があります。
Debenture comes from Medieval Latin debentur, meaning "things owed" or "things that must be paid," from debere, "to owe." The word first carried the idea of money that someone is bound to repay. From there it developed into the sense of a written promise of repayment, and later a type of bond. Related English words include debt and debit.
