Definition
Degradable means able to break down naturally or chemically into simpler substances over time. It is often used for materials, especially in environmental contexts, to describe whether waste can be reduced safely.
Memory Tip
Build it from `degrade + -able`. If something is `degradable`, it can break down over time. If you already know `biodegradable`, use that as a shortcut: `bio-` adds the idea of living things doing the breaking down.
例文
The engineer tested how degradable the polymer was under heat and light.

Etymology
ラテン語 degradare(地位を下げる)に由来。de-(下へ)+ gradus(段階)+ -able(可能)と分解できる。 関連語:grade(等級)、graduate(卒業する)。
Degradable is formed from degrade plus the ending -able. Degrade comes from Latin degradare, from de- "down" and gradus "step" or "degree." The older idea was moving down in rank or level, and later it was used for substances that break down step by step. Related English words include grade and graduate.
