delve は古英語 delfan「掘る」に由来し、さらに印欧祖語の「掘る」語根までさかのぼる。delver や delft が同根で、もとは土をスコップで掘り返す動作そのもの。そこから情報を深く「掘る」比喩が生まれ、今の「掘り下げて調べる」になった。
