depressing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
depressing は depress + -ing で、de-「下へ」とラテン語 premere「押す」から成る depress に由来します。もともと「下へ押し下げる」が、気分を沈ませる意味になったので「憂鬱な」とつながり、pressure や oppress も同じ語根の仲間です。
Depressing comes from depress plus the suffix -ing. Depress goes back to Latin de- "down" and premere "to press." The original idea was to press something downward, and this later became a figurative way to describe lowering someone's mood. Pressure and oppress share the same root.
