To disassemble something means to take it apart into smaller pieces or separate its parts. It is commonly used for machines, furniture, tools, and other physical objects. It is the opposite of assemble.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
assemble が「集めて組み立てる」なら、先頭の dis- が付いた disassemble は「組んだものを逆向きにほどいて、ばらばらの部品に戻す」と捉えると覚えやすいです。disconnect の dis- と同じで、「離す・外す」の感覚。disassemble a machine / disassemble a computer のように、機械や家具を壊すのではなく、順序立てて取り外す場面でよく使います。対になる reassemble「再び組み立てる」も一緒に覚えると定着しやすく、destroy のような“破壊”とは違う語だと区別できます。
