「discordant」はラテン語 dis-「離れて」＋ cord-「心」から出た語で、原義は「心が一致しない」。concord や cordial も同じ cord- を含み、音や意見が discordant だと“気持ちや拍子がばらばら”という不調和が腑に落ちる。
Discordant comes from Latin discordare and related forms built from dis-, "apart," and cord-, "heart." Its basic idea was that hearts were not in agreement.
