disjointはラテン語disiungereにさかのぼり、dis-「離れて」+ jungere「つなぐ」で、もとは「関節を外す」です。joinやjunctionも同じ語根で、つながるはずの部分が切れているから、話や構成にも「ばらばらの」の意味が広がりました。
Disjoint goes back to Latin disiungere, from dis- "apart" and iungere "to join." It is related to English join and junction. It first referred to taking a joint apart, and then broadened to describe anything whose parts do not connect smoothly, such as writing or ideas.
