disproving は disprove の ing 形。まず prove = 「証明する」を確実に置き、dis- が付くと「その証明を打ち消して、誤りだと示す」と考えると覚えやすいです。単に doubt のように「疑う」だけでは弱く、証拠を出して claim, theory, rumor などを崩す場面で使います。disprove a theory, disprove the claim の形でまとめて覚えると実戦的です。disapprove（不賛成だ）とは形が近いので取り違え注意。

dis-「反対に・離して」+ prove「証明する」で、「証明をほどいて真でないと示す」のが disprove。prove は古フランス語経由でラテン語 probare「試す・よいと認める」にさかのぼり、approve や probable も同系なので、試した結果として否定する語だと見える。
