ditching の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ditching は ditch の現在分詞で、ditch は古英語 dīc「溝・堀」に由来し、dike と同根です。もとは「溝を掘る」ですが、そこから「放り出す・見捨てる」の俗義が生まれ、「授業をさぼる」に広がりました。
Ditching is formed from ditch plus -ing. Ditch comes from Old English dīc, referring to a trench, channel, or earthwork, and is historically related to dike. The verb first described making or putting something into a ditch. Informal senses such as “get rid of,” “abandon,” and “leave behind” developed later. From those meanings came the use of ditch for deliberately skipping class, work, or another obligation.
