eczema の語源・成り立ち Etymology
eczemaはギリシャ語ekzemaに由来し、ek-「外へ」＋zein「煮え立つ」から成る。zeoliteも同じzeinを含み、熱で泡立つ石を指す語だ。皮膚が内側から煮立つように赤くただれる感覚が、そのまま語の核になっている。
Eczema comes from Greek ekzema, from ek- "out" + zein "to boil." The word pictured something boiling up to the surface. That image was later used for a skin condition that seems to flare up from within, with redness and irritation.
