曖昧な、ぼんやりした
adjective 形容詞記憶、考え、理解などが明確でなく、細部をはっきり思い出したり説明したりできない状態を表します。a hazy memoryやbe hazy aboutの形で使われ、物理的に景色がかすむ意味から派生した比喩的な語義です。
もやや煙などで景色がぼんやりし、遠くのものがはっきり見えない状態を表す。
This adjective describes air or a view that is blurred by light mist, smoke, or similar particles. Distant objects are difficult to see clearly, though the condition is often less dense than fog.
hazy は名詞 haze(もや・かすみ)に「〜の状態」を作る -y が付いた形で、「かすんでいる」という意味。a hazy sky や hazy weather が頻出する。foggy より薄くぼんやりした視界を表すことが多く、遠くの山が淡く見える暑い日の景色を思い浮かべるとよい。
Connect hazy with the noun haze and the adjective ending -y. Picture distant mountains looking pale and unclear on a hot day, and remember common phrases such as hazy weather and a hazy sky.
The sky looks hazy today.
今日は空がかすんでいる。
The mountains were hazy in the distance.
遠くの山々はかすんでいた。
It was a hot and hazy afternoon.
暑くて、辺りがかすんでいる午後だった。

17世紀の航海用語で、起源は古英語 hasu(灰色がかった)または中期オランダ語 hasich(霧の)とされる。「霧がかかってぼんやりした」が原義で、比喩的に「記憶や考えが曖昧な」意味にも拡張。関連語は haze(もや)、hazing(新人いじめ=頭をぼんやりさせる行為)。
