extensional は extension + -al で、extension は古フランス語を経てラテン語 extendere「外へ伸ばす」に由来します。ex-「外へ」+ tendere「張る・伸ばす」なので、「外へ広げた範囲に関わる」という感覚から、対象の集合や具体例で定義する拡張的な意味につながります。関連語は extend, tension。
