覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

flamingo は長い首と脚、下向きに曲がったくちばしを持つ水鳥です。a pink flamingo、stand on one leg という典型的な組み合わせから、ピンク色の鳥が水辺で片脚立ちする姿を思い浮かべます。複数形は flamingos が普通。語頭が flame に似ていても、「炎の鳥」という単純な英語合成語ではありません。

Fix flamingo in memory through its unmistakable features: a tall pink wading bird with a long neck, long legs, and a bill that bends downward. Picture one standing on one leg beside shallow water. Common phrases such as “a pink flamingo,” “a flock of flamingos,” and “flamingos at the zoo” reinforce the noun’s use. The regular plural is flamingos. Although the beginning resembles flame and may help you recall the bird’s vivid color, flamingo was not simply created in English by combining flame with another element.

例文

一羽のフラミンゴが水辺で片脚で立っていた。

私たちは動物園でたくさんのフラミンゴを見た。

The flamingo's bright pink feathers caught everyone's attention.

そのフラミンゴの鮮やかなピンク色の羽がみんなの目を引いた。

flamingo の語源・成り立ち Etymology

flamingo はスペイン語 flamenco、ポルトガル語 flamengo を経て英語に入り、もとは「フランドル人」を指す語に由来するとされます。赤みのある服装や顔色の連想から鳥名になったと考えられ、Flemish や Flanders と同根だと思うと名前の由来がつかめます。

English flamingo was borrowed through Spanish flamenco and Portuguese flamengo. These forms originally referred to a Fleming, a person from Flanders, and are related to Flemish and Flanders. How the regional name became the bird’s name is not completely certain; explanations often connect it with a reddish complexion or colorful appearance. It should therefore not be analyzed as a modern English compound based on flame.
