forbidding は、人・表情・場所・課題などが威圧的、不気味、または困難そうで、近づいたり取り組んだりするのをためらわせる様子を表す形容詞です。

古英語のforbēodanに由来し、接頭辞for-（反対）と語根bēodan（命じる）から成ります。同根語にbidやbodeがあり、「強く命じて拒む」イメージが転じ、現在は近寄りがたい威圧的な様子を表す形容詞として使われます。
Forbidding is the present participle of forbid, which descends from Old English forbēodan. That verb combined for-, carrying an opposing or prohibitive force, with bēodan, “to command or order.” The second element is related to English bid and bode. In forming forbidding, English doubles the final d before adding -ing. The participle can describe an active prohibition, while a later adjectival development produced the sense “threatening or uninviting.”
