garrote は英語がスペイン語 garrote「棒・絞首具」を借りた語で、基本的には一語の借用なので接頭辞より道具名そのものが核です。もとは「棒で締め上げる器具」の名だったため、名詞がそのまま動詞化して「絞殺する」になった流れが見えます。関連語は garrotte, garroter。
Garrote was borrowed into English from Spanish garrote, meaning a stick or a strangling device. The tool name was central from the start, rather than any separable prefix or suffix. Because the word first named the instrument, it later also gave rise to the verb meaning to kill by strangling; compare garrotte and garroter.
