Etymology

Ghetto comes from Italian ghetto, first recorded in connection with the segregated Jewish quarter established in Venice in 1516. The district was located near a former foundry, and the name is often associated with Venetian geto, “casting” or “foundry,” related to Italian gettare, “to cast,” although details of the word's earliest development have been debated. The term later spread to other enforced Jewish quarters and then to segregated or impoverished urban districts more generally.
