Etymology

Gossiping is the present participle and gerund of gossip, formed by adding -ing. Gossip developed from Old English godsibb, made from god and sibb, “relative” or “kin.” It originally referred to a godparent or another person spiritually related to a family and later to a close companion, especially one present at a birth. Its meaning then shifted to familiar social talk and finally to conversation or reports about other people's private affairs.
