holdup は hold「つかんで止める」+ up からなる複合語で、hold は古英語 healdan「保つ・つかむ」にさかのぼる。withhold や behold と同根で、相手や流れを“その場で止める”発想から「遅延」「強盗」の意味が生まれた。
