違法性とは、法律に違反している、または法律で禁止されている性質のことです。行為や行動が法的に許されていない状態を表します。
Illegality is the state or fact of being against the law. It is often used in legal, political, or formal discussion when talking about actions, decisions, or situations that are not legally allowed.

illegalityは否定の接頭辞in-がlの前でil-となり、legal「法律の」+ 名詞語尾-ityが重なった語です。legalはラテン語lex/legis「法」にさかのぼるので、字面どおり「法ではない性質」が違法性になります。legalやlegislateも同じ根を持ちます。
