まず past を「過ぎ去ったもの」として覚えると、in the past は直訳に近く「過ぎ去った時間の中では」→「以前は／過去には」とつながる。文頭で In the past, ... と置いて、今との対比で昔の習慣・考え方・社会の状態を述べることが多い。the past だけで「過去」という名詞にもなるのでセットで定着しやすい。before は単に基準点より前、ago は今から何年前、used to は昔の習慣をよりはっきり言う表現で、役割の違いも一緒に押さえると混同しにくい。
