incumbency はラテン語 incumbere に由来し、in-「上に」+ cumbere「横たわる」から、もとは「上にのしかかる・寄りかかる」です。ここから「職に就いてその地位の上にあること」という意味になり、incumbent や recumbent に同じ語根が見えます。
