inequality は否定の in- と equality から成り、後半はラテン語 aequus「平らな・等しい」に由来します。equal や equity と同じ根を持ち、文字どおり「同じ高さでないこと」から不平等という意味になります。
Inequality is built from in- "not" and equality. The second part comes from Latin aequus, meaning "level," "even," or "equal," the same root seen in equal and equity. The word therefore began with the idea of things not being on the same level, and from that it developed into the sense of unfair difference or lack of equality.
