Inflammable means able to catch fire very easily. It is used for dangerous materials such as chemicals, gases, or liquids. This word can be confusing because it means the same as flammable, not the opposite.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず flame（炎）を芯に置くと覚えやすい語です。flammable も同じく「燃えやすい」で、inflammable はそれに in- が付いても否定にはならない点が最大の注意。invisible の in- と同じ感覚で「燃えない」と読むと危険です。ガソリン、薬品、ガスなどの容器ラベルで見たら、「火気厳禁」「すぐ火が付く物」という警告語として結び付けると定着します。意味を迷ったら flammable とほぼ同義、とセットで覚えるのが安全です。
Keep your eye on `flame` in the middle of the word. That is the safest memory hook, because `inflammable` and `flammable` mean almost the same thing. Do not trust the `in-` here as a negative prefix like in `invisible`.
