自分の能力や魅力、人間関係などに十分な自信が持てず、不安や心もとなさを感じることを指します。また、生活や経済状況が安定せず、将来への安心感が得られない状態を表すこともあります。文脈によって心理的な自信の欠如にも、社会的・経済的な不安定さにも使われます。
Insecurity is a feeling of uncertainty, anxiety, or lack of confidence about yourself or a situation. It is commonly used when talking about emotions, relationships, appearance, or social status. It can also refer to an unstable or unsafe condition in a wider social or political context.

insecurity は secure「安心した・安全な」に in- がついて、「安心できない状態」と分解すると記憶しやすい。security が治安・安全保障にも使える広い語なのに対し、insecurity は「心の自信のなさ」と「生活の不安定さ」の両方に出るのがポイント。have insecurities about one’s looks のように複数形で“自分の気にしている点”を表すことも多い。anxiety が一時的な不安なら、insecurity はもっと土台にある心もとなさ。

insecurity の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 securus「心配のない」が核で、se-「離れて」+ cura「気遣い」から secure が生まれ、そこに in-「否定」+ -ity「性質」が付いた語。つまり「安心が欠けた状態」で、不安の意味になる。secure や cure にも同じ cura の気配がある。
Insecurity is built from secure plus the negative prefix in- and the noun ending -ity. Secure goes back to Latin securus, meaning "free from care," from se- "apart" and cura "care" or "concern." So insecurity originally meant the condition of not being free from worry. Secure and cure are related through the same Latin root cura.
